UAE officials have confirmed that their ruler, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, has officially wed the daughter of the Emirati leader, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in a ceremony on Saturday at the royal palace in Abu Dhabi.
The bride is named Asma, who is also the sister of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, according to state media.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the United Arab Emirates’ palace in Jeddah.
A senior official with the ruling royal family said in a statement that the marriage was officially confirmed by the royal family in a meeting of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, which also includes Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashad al Maktoush, the UAE’s highest religious authority.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also said that the couple will be formally married in Abu Dhabi mosque, which is a prominent mosque in Jiddah.
The ceremony, which was carried out at a private residence and without the presence of the media, is being seen as a significant step towards the formal recognition of the marriage.
